Just across the border from Surrey into Sussex is the luxurious Alexander House Hotel and tucked inside is the award-winning subteranian Utopia Spa.

Upon arrival the friendly reception staff offer light refreshments before giving you a short tour of the spa facilities including the stunning pool and sky-domed hydrotherapy pool, monsoon shower, steam room, sauna, state of the art gym, several relaxation lounges along with 25 treatment rooms. The Grecian inspired interiors and calm mood lighting instantly make you feel relaxed and pampered and the lighting is dark enough to inspire confidence in being in your swimwear!

My spa day package included a back, neck & shoulder massage, facial and a manicure. I had the same therapist for both the massage and facial which were excellent and despite having 25 treatment rooms Utopia Spa somehow manages to avoid a conveyor belt feel. I was particularly impressed and pleased that the therapist said my skin was very good and didn't launch into a hard sell on the Temple Spa products sold in the small shop which tends to happen in most beauty salons.

The quiet relaxing room.

The manicure although carried out well by another friendly and immaculately turned out therapist was a bit of a disaster as I smudged one hand opening the door back into the spa then smudge it several times more changing back into my clothes to go home!

For those that choose to be more active you can fit a session in the gym or join one of the group classes on offer such as yoga or core strength. For me it was a pleasure to just relax for a whole day and not rush from one thing to the next with one eye permantly on the clock.

As I visited in winter I stayed inside but if you're visiting in better weather there is also tennis, bike hire, trekking trail, private Zen garden and outdoor hot tub to indulge in.

My package included the choice of either a two-course lunch or afternoon tea in Reflections restaurant but for those staying overnight there is a cosy, fire-lit champagne bar and fine dining restaurant.

Autumn Fruit Picking

If sloes are proving difficult to find there are still plenty of blackberries about.

Have a look at Garson Farm's website (garsons.co.uk) to see what seasonal fruits and vegetables are ready for picking.
