Comfort & Style (but avoid the chocolate buttons!)
As an Esher girl I always choose the Odeon as it's a walk away or I can park both hastle-free and actually free at Sandown Racecourse if it's raining. On this occasion though my friends and I decided to see Gone Girl at the Everyman Cinema in Walton upon Thames as most of them prefer it.
For those of you unfamiliar with Everyman Cinemas they are a world apart from multiplex cinemas. Firstly there is a very nice bar area where you can choose your wine to take into the film along with nibbles such as freshly made pizza or nachos. The sweets are served in little white boxes to avoid the annoyance of rustling about in a plastic bag. And then there's the seating, velvet sofas and armchairs with small tables positioned to put your glass of wine and nibbles on. The staff are knowledgeable, polite and very helpful. A couple sitting nearby had rushed straight from work and brought sandwiches to eat. Rather than ask them to leave or forbid them from eating their meal the staff brought them fresh white take-away boxes to put their sandwiches into and took away the noisy packaging. It's all very civilised and that's reflected in the clientel and the price. On my visit the crowd was mid 30s upwards and the trip far more costly than I would pay at the Odeon. £12 for the ticket, over £5 for a glass of wine & £7.40 for 2 small boxes of chocolate buttons (they were truly awful, certainly not Cadburys.) That totals £24.40 for one person to see a film not including the car park. I'll definitely return to Everyman Walton when I want to treat myself but Odeon Esher will still be my local choice.
By the way go and see Gone Girl it's a great thriller. Rosamund Pike plays a terrifyingly attention-seeking wife to Ben Aflec. (Ben, usually my ideal man, must have been in the midst of beefing up for his role as Batman as he was disappointingly chunky for me!)
